Allman Wedding – South Padre Island – Ben Briones Studios

This past weekend we photographed a beautiful couple at South Padre Island, Texas. Andrew and Abigail chose to have their ceremony by the sea sounded by their close family and friends. The bride looked stunning in her dress and Mr. Andrew and his groomsmen stood out in their maroon fishing shirts perfect for the occasion.

After the ceremony we photographed the couple and their bridal party with the ocean as their backdrop. Abigal and Andrew had special request to be photographed with their two dogs, which we happily photographed this newly formed family of four! Later in the evening the couple had their reception at Schlitterbahn Resort on South Padre Island. Here are some of our favorites shots from their wedding. Enjoy!

UTPA Baseball Team vs Illinois University Baseball Team – 2009

Back in my UTPA days I photographed sports, specifically baseball. I would use a 400mm lens, which weighed chingos and I had to drag it around in a rolling case, but it was fun and a great learning experience. I recently found these shots in one of my old hard drives and thought it would be cool to share them with you. Enjoy! _MG_0004_MG_0038_MG_0066_MG_9918_MG_9939_MG_9947_MG_9963_MG_9980_MG_9989

Celena Jacobsen – 35mm Film – Ben Briones Photography

Many years back I did a photo shoot of my friend Celina Jacobsen, now Celina Jacobsen Norton. I shot her wedding by the way. I took these 35mm film shots at her aunt’s home in Edinburg, Texas with my Canon AE-1 using Ilford Delta 100 Professional Black and White Film.

I am pretty sure I also took some digital photos at the same time but I cannot find them but when I do I will link them HERE. I love the grain and scratches in the film. I want to do more film photo shoots so if you are down let me know. Enjoy my favorite shots.

The importance of Pre-production for a high profile portrait!

A week ago at work (South Texas College) I was assigned to photograph the college president. The school president’s schedule is always very tight. I got lucky that she was already going to be taking photos with The Monitor Newspaper in the morning so I was able to piggy-back on that. She was scheduled to be interviewed and photographed on a Monday so the Friday before I did some location scouting and light testing.

I asked a colleague to sit in and recommend locations since she is the facility manager. I was only going to have about 5-10mins with the president so I had to have a simple setup. The lighting equipment I used was the Canon Speedlite 600EX‑RT Flash, mounted and controlled by PocketWizards FlexTT5 Transceivers and diffused by a Westcott Rapid 26″ Octa Softbox. The camera I used was the Canon 5D MK III with a 70-200mm 2.8 Sigma lens.

Of all the locations we tested out we only used two. When you are photographing high profile subjects you want to make them travel the least possible and make them feel as comfortable as possible. My colleague joined me Monday to assist me with lighting and hair for the president. Make sure to take assistants with you when doing these type of portraits. Of the two locations used only one photo was selected and published. View the shot below.

Perez Wedding – Riverside Club – Ben Briones Studios

Love this beautiful simple wedding I shot at the Riverside Club in Mission, Texas. The bride was filipino and the groom hispanic so the fusion of both cultures was beautiful. Dimitra Hernandez – Flashpoint eVOLV 200 Daylight Test – McAllen, Texas

A few months back I tested  the eVOLV 200 in straight 12:00pm daylight with and without a diffuser to see if it can be used during high-noon and these are the results from that product test photo shoot. Special thanks to my coworker and friend Dimitra for modeling for this product test. Flashpoint eVOLV 200 – Studio Head Shot Test – Ben Briones Studios

#TBT

A few months ago I tested the Flashpoint eVOLV 200 outdoor with these two cool kids and I loved how the photos came out. I have been recently looking for a smaller powerful light for my photography and the Flashpoint eVOLV 200 / Godox AD200 is a competitor for my money. Yes, I am probably like a billion years late with these lights but who cares.

Anyways, I was able to gather these guys again for another photo shoot but this time in my studio for head shots. I used a very small octabox, I believe it was a 18inch, and a YONGNUO YN560 for background light. To kill some shadows we used a small reflector under their face. Here are some of my favorite shots from the photo session testing out the Flashpoint eVOLV 200 in my studio. I am really, really thinking of getting this light but we will see. 2018-09-15_00012018-09-15_00032018-09-15_00022018-09-15_00042018-09-15_00072018-09-15_00052018-09-15_0006

Photography Lesson with Edna – McAllen, Texas

Photography Lesson: Composition

A while back I met up with my good friend Edna, who is an amazing photographer, to do a photography lesson on composition. To be honest I don’t know why she does lessons with me because her work is amazing already but I’ll take any moment to teach anyone who’s passionate about photography and getting better with a camera.

Photograph One – Edna V. –  BREAKDOWN

The photo is really well balanced from the top and from the bottom. This is important in when composing a shot because you never know when your client may want to purchase a print. I always teach my photographers to shoot for print and this shot was perfectly shot with that in mind. The pose / body also forms a triangle and that is important to note because the human eye is attracted to simple shapes and if you can create those simple shapes through human poses you have won the eye. I also encouraged her to shoot from an angle so we can get the leading lines formed by the bridge and rails. This helps the viewer follow the lines to your subject.

Photograph Two – Edna V. –  BREAKDOWN

Often you find yourself near a set a stairs and want to pose your subject on the steps, which is what we did here. If it’s a long stairway I always suggest to sit the model 3 to 4 steps up from the bottom to allow some space above the head. In the photo above my student Edna gave enough space to frame the subject in the stairway. This setting was perfect for applying repetition, which is another important tool to use in composition. I was able to help see the shape in the body and the repetition of the stairs for the composition.

Kudos to my student Edna, as mentioned before, she’s already an amazing photographer and sharpening up her composition skills will just make her better. You can view here work her at this link: swankyfoto
