When you think about life there will always be those milestones that you are extremely proud of and will forever be stored in your memory. For me that’s my time at The University of Texas at Austin. The four years I spent there were some of my happiest moment but of my toughest days. To be honest the range of emotions range from the the worst to the best.
A weekend ago I took a trip up to Austin, Texas to take some furniture to my youngest sister Veronica because she is now attending UT-Austin now. Her and I have visited together before she was an actual student but this time around we took a two-hour tour of the places I use to have class and the routes I use to take back when I was a student.
I spent the majority of the time at the Moody College of Communication building

Last weekend we hangout and photographed this sweet couple. They are planning a beautiful wedding in Mexico and needed some engagement photos for the big announcement. I will say that the couple is already legally married but they are still planning, what will be amazing wedding, and only because I am a groomsmen. I am super excited for that!
I’ve known Luis for many years now, maybe like 7 plus years or even more but we have a good friendship and I consider him one of my best friends. He actually helped shape the Ben Briones Studio brand! He and his team created my logo and overall look of my business.
Luis and Maripili are a perfect match. Both of them are extremely creative, compassionate, stylish, and extremely fun! When we were planning their engagement session we decided on something cute and outdoors. The couple has an awesome marketing company that they are successfully running. The first place that came to mind was Memory Lane Photo Spot in Mission, Texas. The spot was perfect because the couple because they wanted to include their new dog. Enough words let’s jump over to these awesome photos of Luis and Maripili and their cute dog!
Yesterday while searching for a set of photos I stumbled upon this cinematic portrait of my friend Maria Dolores Alvarado, which suites her well because Maria is a an actress, playwright, and dancer.
Below you will find a color version of the shot which is the original rendition. I saw some magic in portrait so I decided to take it into photoshop and try salvage it with some heavy editing.
I wonder if other photographers ever find accidental shots are gems and show them off too? I think what stood out most about this shot was the scene. As I mentioned before Maria is a performer so the latter in the background reminded me of a stage being setup and the lighting reminded me of the old black and white noir style film scenes.
It’s crazy how a photographers mind works right? This shot was an accidental shot taken while setting up for Christmas photos back in December.
This sweet couple are such dolls and I mean that in all honesty. They are such a good looking couple. We had a blast doing this photo session. Miriam is the younger sister to one of the my brides, Melody Rios Contreras. Beauty does run in the family. I have photographed Melody, their parents and now these two love birds. One of my favorite things as a photographer is becoming a “family photographer”. In the photography industry that is goal worth working hard towards.
The photo shoot took place at one of my favorite places; Memory Lane Photo Spot in Mission, Texas. It’s a beautiful 100 year old home that has an old country style setting with a variety of sections to capture different type of unique photos. I really love the simplicity of their outfits. The touch of the red heart shaped balloons was super cute as well. Even though I may not be their wedding photographer I still feel blessed to have documented this milestone.

Joe and Theresa’s engagement party was such an adventure.
I took on this event on a Sunday. I first met with Theresa and her mom at Moonbeans in McAllen one afternoon to discuss my services and after just sitting their with them for a while I knew they were the type of people God purposely places in my path to serve. Theresa and her mom are true servants of Jesus and I know that Joe to has dedicated his servitude to the kingdom of God.
In the 7-years I have been a photographer I have photographed 3 traditional indian engagement celebrations but this once was my first Catholic ceremony. It gets better. At our meeting Theresa’s mom wanted to include traditional Mexican cultura into her daughter’s event, so she asked for mentioned that they were looking for a certain type of entertainment for their guest who were visiting the Rio Grande Valley for the first time. Low and behold, they integrated folklorico dancers into the already eventful night of dance performances.
I loved everything about this day. You could really tell how in love Joe and Theresa are. And that’s only because I just met Joe that day of the event since he is from Chicago. I knew we were bros as soon as he shared his love for Taco Palenque A.K.A. Taco P.
The day begin with both my shooting partner Laura Soria and I capturing some precious moments during the couples preparation. From there we then traveled over to Theresa’s home church, Syro Malabar Catholic Church in Edinburg, Texas. They had a beautiful choir and a gorgeous ceremony. Then we made our way over to the Edinburg City Hall to take the couples formal portraits. Lastly we then finished the day at Mayrin Banquet Hall, where the couple celebrated with family and friends.
Enough talk. I will let our images take over the conversation.

Iliasis Muniz is a super talented up and coming photographer out of the South Padre Island area. She has been creating lively art for her clients for over 3-years now and has big ambitions to expand way beyond the Rio Grande Valley. She’s bubbly, giggly and a lot of fun! Definitely important qualities to have in the photography industry. For anyone who is familiar with photography personality, Jasmine Starr, Ms. Iliasis Muniz tends to remind me of her a lot, but of course, Iliasis has her own flair and unique qualities that allow her to stand out.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Iliasis for the first time this past Tuesday. What I really enjoyed was that she turned out to be exactly how you would imagine her being just by her personality on social. And to top it off she was so nice and brought me an unexpected gift. We met at Moonbeans in McAllen, Texas and talked about photography, business and life. Then we produced this pretty cool video interview laying out a little bit of her story. I think till this date this is one of my favorite episodes of The Photographer Series! Check it out, enjoy it, and let us know what you think!

After editing these awesome photos shot by Jessica Musick, an associate of my Studio, I can’t help but to be very happy with one a returning client and two the awesome work all my associates produce for my brand.
Trusting someone to go out and photograph YOUR client can be a scary thing. Delegating is a important factor to growth. It is also a important factor in building up your associates in giving them responsibility and ability to shine. For those who are looking into building a business that works best for you, never be afraid of trusting your associate shooters.
I will never take credit for the work my associates did, especially someone like miss Jessica Musick because she came into my brand as seasoned shooter. But I will take credit for the opportunity for growth in Jessica Musick’s photography career because I choose to completely trust her skill and ability to create quality art for my brand.
I present to you these intense portraits made by Jessica Musick for Ben Briones Studios.

So much love for this gorgeous bride! Cynthia Cameron (now Flores) thank you so much becoming my friend, being a Sister-in-Christ, and just overall trusting me to capture some of the most beautiful milestones in your life. I always tell all my clients that you have to love your photographer and us a photographers have to love our clients and I think the relationship and friendship we have built is simply based off that true love Christ has shown us.
Today is a special day for you and Baltazar and I cannot wait to how happy you two will be once the night is over. God bless you and all your family. Cynthia, my Sister-in-Christ, I love you and Baltazar and always know that I am here for you two whenever!
Enough emotional blah blahs! I wanted to share some of all time favorite shots form Cynthia’s beautiful bridal photo session at the Skipper Ranch in Encino, Texas. The first time I photographed at the Skipper Ranch was last fall as a second shooter for Photos by Adriana. It was such a beautiful country wedding and it just brought the Skipper Ranch to life as a go-to premiere outdoor wedding venue. To see some images from that wedding please click on this link: Michael & Tome Fairas Wedding by Photos by Adriana.
When my beautiful bride was looking for a country style venue for her bridals the Skipper Ranch was the very first location that came to mind. I quickly called Mr. Farias to book our session and we made it happen. Ever since that wedding I knew this location would be one of my top places to visit with my clients for my sessions. The Skipper ranch had so much variety to use and I know it made Cynthia very happy. We had the opportunity to shoot indoor and outdoor for a very reasonable rate. I would highly suggest the Skipper Ranch for any type of photo session and outdoor special event.

This session was definitely a special one. Thank you Ortiz family for allowing me in your life and trusting my brand to capture these beautiful pictures of Jackie Ortiz in celebration of her 15th birthday!
The location that was chosen for the portraits and event is a beautiful outdoor venue named Hacienda Paraiso in Weslaco, Texas. Jackie’s dress alone had so much pop! I honestly really happy with these results because I felt like it flowed so smoothly. And the fact you allowed me to be as creative as I wanted really added to these beautiful images.

One of the first things beginners always ask industry professionals is what equipment they are using. I know when I started off it was it was a question I would always ask.
Now I am not a gear-head nor do I care to have the latest gadgets in photography. I do not want to break the bank. In my opinion, an artist creates with what he is given.
The most common misconception in the photography industry is that the equipment makes the photographer better. My advice to any aspiring photographer looking to make a living off the trade is to stick to the equipment they begin with for 2-4 years at least before switching out or upgrading. The reason I say this and many industry leaders agree is because you must master your equipment and not let it control you.
I have owned my equipment for more than 7-years. The newest piece of equipment I own is probably my Canon 6D purchased in January 2013 and my travel light stand. The rest of the items I have had for 5-years or more.
Today you will get to see all the equipment I use;
CAMERAS: Canon 5D and Canon 6D
LENSES: Canon 25-35mm f/3.5, Canon 50mm f/1.4, Canon 40mm f/2.8 and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
LIGHTING: Canon Flash 430ex II, Canon Flash 380ex, Alienbee 800
TRIGGERS: Pocket Wizard Plus II Transceiver and Cowboy Studio Wireless Triggers
LIGHT STANDS: Manfrotto 420B 3- Section Combi- Boom Stand and ProMaster LS-CT Compact Travel Light Stand
If you would like to play around with any of the equipment listed here or try out anything else from my arsenal, then feel free to fill out the rental form below.
Another beautiful mother and son: Christmas portrait in the bag! This session was so much fun! Ace was such a sport and very energetic. Ms. Alley, you are raising a fine little gentleman.
My favorite part of the session was when Ace got to open his early Christmas gift mom got him specifically for this session. You know those cake smash pics kids do…well we took it up a notch to a gift smash session! I was just as excited as Ace to see what he was getting.
Alley told me something that moved my heart as a photographer. She told me that every year she tries to take pics with her son. That is something special and I wish every parent took the time to capture those precious moments of their kids as they grow. Alley, you are doing an excellent job with Mr. Ace and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

I once went through a phase where I would tell people I only shot weddings but you know what? Screw that! I am a photographer; plain and simple! My job is to serve my community, my clients and my God through this special gift. This quineañera has inspired me to rekindle that love for that In-The-Moment-Photojournalism style that makes my brand Ben Briones Studios stand out! Carol and Destiny, thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me and inspiring me that special days like this one is the sole purpose why I love photography.
Let me tell you a little bit about this beautiful family. Carol, the mom, is so animated and loving. There is never a dull moment with her. Her husband (a.k.a. Chubby) as hard as he looks, he is such a sweet-heart. Carol and Chubby have two younger girls and a boy who are so lovable as well, but Destiny Love Peña is something special in her own way (as I’m sure her other siblings are special at their own rights). Destiny has her mother’s beauty. When she speaks, you can tell this 15-year old is extremely smart. Actually, she’s an all A student and is currently attending South Texas College. Her parents have done such a beautiful job raising this young lady and on December 6, 2014 they celebrated her entry into womanhood.
Destiny’s quince was extremely fun and elegant. From the thumping beats that blasted, her party bus, to the last family portrait, I can truly say my team and I really enjoyed ourselves. The family rented one of my all time favorite venue’s, D’Gala in McAllen, Texas. Destiny’s dress was amazing and uniquely made just for her. She glowed all night. Loved ones and friends filled the beautifully decorated venue with laughter, dancing and affection for the quince. Destiny Love Peña, thank you for inspiring me and trusting me to capture such a memorable time in your life. Love you Carol, Destiny and family. Enjoy!
Special thanks to Imanol Miranda and Ramiro Galvan.
