You wouldn’t be able to from these photos that just about an hour before there was a crazy storm with flash flood warnings. We had even made the call to Jackie’s mom that we were going to have to reschedule the shoot but I am glad we didn’t! Really love how this photo shoot turned out. Sara took lead while I finished another shoot with our other grad client Caro that kind of overlapped with this shoot but the good thing was I was also shooting at the McAllen Convention Center too. Below you will see some of our favorite shots from this grad portrait session.

This past weekend we photographed one our church friends. She recently graduated from Harlingen High School South. Valeria was fun to shoot. Sara and I really enjoyed photographing her cap & gown photos around the downtown Harlingen, Texas area. We started off at our favorite local coffee shop Girl of All Trades, then we made our way down the road using different spots and murals. Here are out favorite shots from this photo shoot.

Grad sessions can be creative, fun, and formal all at the same time! When I shot Ashley’s grad photos at The University of Texas at Austin, I knew there would be a ton of great locations or backdrops to make good photos but how to use those spaces creatively was up to me.
CREATIVE
I always recommend my grad clients to bring their regalia and 1 to 2 outfits to get them in different looks. Ashley decided on her cap and gown with one nice dress. So outfits are part of the creative part of the shoot. Lighting is the second way you can make the photo shoot more creative and as you can see in these 6 photos I used lighting pretty differently giving each image a different feel. I used both ambient and studio lighting.
FUN
Posing your client in fun and creative poses can make for fun photos. I sometimes ask my clients to spin or jump creating movement a sense of movement in your shots. You can also tilt your camera in odd positions for cool perspectives. What creates the most fun photo for a client is when you allow them to be themselves. Most people have their own silly way of being unique and when you can capture that you’ll have great pics. FORMAL
Grad photos can be a little serious too. These are big milestones for many people and sometimes these moments call for formal portraits. In grad photos that means full regalia or formal outfit. In these photos we shot formal pictures in both outfits.

Lately I have been featuring a ton of my older work. As a photographer, if you are persistent, your photography skills will grow as well. I love going back and looking at my stuff shot back in the day when my love for photography was blossoming into what it has become of it now and comparing it to my newest work. You will see the difference in technique and style. Some of it has to do with you now having better equipment but some can just be artistic direction. Here is a quick fun shoot I did with my friend Laura at UTPA back in 2008. Below you will see my “contact sheet” to see how many photos I took to get “the shots”. I believe I shot this with my Canon 5D (the original). Enjoy!

I wanted to show off these fun UTPA Grad Session photo shoot I did a while back. Ms. Gina had contracted me for her senior photos and I wanted to shoot them on the UTPA now UTRGV campus using natural light. If you know me, I usually carry around some mad lighting gear, but this time around we just rolled with a reflector. We also shot during golden hour which made the lighting even more beautiful. Check out the awesome photos we produced for Gina’s grad session.

While at The University of Texas at Austin I had the pleasure of photographing a few friends and it became more special when they hired me to photograph their graduation photos. I photographed Mariela a few days before graduation so she could send photos to her mother and family members because they were not going to be able to make it to the ceremony due to some complications. Pictures are important when freezing special moments in your life. I encourage everyone who is graduating to take some grad photos. Here are my favorite from this photo session.

Took these beautiful edgy portraits of my friend Hailey mid March in some cool spots downtown Edinburg, Texas. I really have been enjoying my Fujifilm XH1 and this photo shoot really allowed me to explore with it more. I set it up on a bracket mode, but not just any bracket mode. The XT3 and XH1 have a film simulation bracket mode so when you shoot you get 3 different looks plus a raw file. Some of the photos you see here are JPEGs straight out of camera.
For this shoot we used a mix of natural light, reflector and my Flashpoint eVOLV 200 strobe. Hailey is a “seasoned model” because she’s been in a few of my shoots at South Texas College. She did amazing at posing and was very open to our ideas as well. Loved the two outfits she chose. They both went well with the two locations we chose. Here are some of my favorites shots from this photo shoot. If you are looking into taking some fun portraits please fill out the form below.

Sometimes you get inspired by the light and the beauty around and have to bust out the camera to capture it all. Shot these photos of my beautiful girlfriend during one of our on/off park walks.
