While at The University of Texas at Austin I shot the sport of Volleyball for the first time. I really didn’t know what to expect, where I was allowed to stand, or what to shoot exactly.
I had photographed collegiate basketball, track, soccer and baseball. Volleyball was going to a new challenge but I was up for it. Around this time I was shooting with a Canon 5D, 70-200mm 2.8 lens, 50mm lens, and 20-35mm 3.5 lens. I did my best with what I had and I took it as a learning experience. I don’t think the college newspaper or yearbook ever sent me out to another volleyball game after this but that’s okay, I learned.
The game was enjoyable because; One, it was UT athletics and two the crowd of fired up students as amazingly supportive. This shot is one of my best from this first time experience.

On Saturday July 29, 2017 I photographed two Games of Texas tournaments in Edinburg, Texas and McAllen, Texas as a freelance photographer for The Monitor Newspaper. I shot Basketball at the Edinburg Sports and Wellness Center and Volleyball at the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen.
Back in college I shot collegiate basketball at The University of Texas Pan American and at my alma mater The University of Texas at Austin but this junior league was intense. There were girls teams and boys team and they all played with heart!
Then later in the day I shot girls volleyball and that was interesting because it was the first time shooting indoor volleyball. After a while I got the hang of it and now I feel confident the next time I’m court side at a volleyball game.
These are my favorite shots from the Games of Texas 2017.
